Punjab imposes Section 144 from September 13 to 17

Lahore: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province to maintain public order and protect the lives and property of citizens. According to the Punjab Home Department, the restrictions will remain in place from September 13 to September 17, 2026.

Ban on gatherings and processions

According to a spokesperson for the Home Department, gatherings of five or more people at public places, highways and open spaces have been completely banned across Punjab. Processions and assemblies are also prohibited.

The carrying and display of all kinds of weapons at public places will also be banned. Encouraging or motivating people to participate in illegal gatherings will also be prohibited.

Weddings and religious events exempted

According to the Home Department, the restrictions will not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship. Courts, government institutions and events held with official permission will also remain exempt.

Law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies and security personnel performing official duties will also be exempt from these restrictions.

Decision taken due to terror threats

According to the Home Department spokesperson, law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies have received information about immediate security threats.

Intelligence reports indicate that terrorist organizations are planning to target public gatherings. Large crowds at political gatherings, rallies, sit-ins, processions and protests could become easy targets for possible terrorist attacks.

Public safety is top priority

The Home Department said law enforcement agencies had requested immediate preventive measures to deal with possible terrorist threats. The Punjab Home Secretary has imposed an immediate ban on public gatherings under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.

The Punjab Home Department has also issued a formal notification in this regard. According to the spokesperson, protecting the lives and property of citizens is the top priority of the Punjab government.
