Punjab orders merit-based decisions on Rule 17-A cases

LAHORE: Families waiting for years for appointments under Rule 17-A have received a fresh ray of hope as the Punjab Agriculture Department has directed officials to decide all pending cases strictly on merit and in accordance with law.

The department issued the directive through Notification No. SO(A)-II/9-3/2023, dated August 11, 2026, addressed to the Director General Agriculture (Extension), Punjab. The move follows legal advice from the Assistant Advocate General Punjab and directions issued by the Provincial Ombudsman.

Under the notification, authorities have been asked to examine every pending Rule 17-A application on its individual merits instead of allowing cases to remain unresolved.

The department has also directed officials to categorise pending applications in light of principles laid down by the Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan (FCCP) and dispose of them in accordance with the applicable law and government policy.

“This approach would be in consonance with both the judicial pronouncements and the directions issued by the Provincial Ombudsman,” the notification states.

Copies of the directive have been forwarded to Chief Agriculture Officers and relevant directors in Faisalabad, Sargodha and Lahore for necessary action.
