The decision was approved during a meeting chaired by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, where officials reviewed measures to control smog and improve air quality across Punjab.

The meeting decided to ensure strict implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) introduced to combat smog. Authorities will take action against vehicles, factories and brick kilns found contributing to air pollution.

A province-wide crackdown was also approved against the burning of crop residues and waste, as well as industrial units responsible for releasing harmful emissions.

The meeting further decided to impose heavy fines on individuals and businesses involved in burning garbage and plastic.

Officials also agreed to take action against waste-burning activities involving companies working under the Suthra Punjab programme. The contract of any company found involved in such practices may be cancelled.

Environmental SOPs will also be strictly enforced at barbecue outlets and food streets across Punjab. Restaurants found violating the prescribed environmental rules will face strict action, including sealing of their premises.

The measures are part of the Punjab government’s efforts to curb smog and reduce sources of air pollution ahead of the smog season.

Authorities have been directed to ensure that government vehicles comply with environmental standards and that polluting activities are dealt with without exception.
