Qatar calls for greater Gulf security self-reliance

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari has said that a strategic alliance with the United States is important, but it is not enough to ensure the security of Gulf countries.

Speaking in a statement, Al Ansari said Gulf states must focus on strengthening their own security capabilities.

He said self-reliance in security matters was the only way forward for the region.

“We need our partners and allies,” Al Ansari said.

“But we cannot rely solely on our allies and partners for our security.”

The Qatari spokesperson stressed that Gulf countries must develop stronger national defence and security capabilities.

He said regional states should be able to protect their own security while continuing to work with international partners.

Al Ansari’s remarks come amid heightened diplomatic efforts involving the Gulf, Iran and the United States.

Qatar has also said it is awaiting a bilateral agreement between Iran and Oman before US-Iran talks mediated by Oman.

The Qatari position highlights the need for Gulf states to strengthen their own security arrangements while maintaining strategic partnerships with the United States and other allies.
