RAWALPINDI: A disturbing video showing a man clinging to the bonnet of a moving car while a motorcycle is dragged along Murree Road has sparked widespread public concern and prompted Rawalpindi Traffic Police to initiate legal proceedings.

The incident reportedly occurred late Friday night within the jurisdiction of New Town Police Station following a collision involving two cars. According to police, the driver of a black vehicle allegedly struck another car before attempting to leave the scene.

The owner of the damaged vehicle reportedly tried to stop the driver and, as the black car continued moving, climbed onto its bonnet. A motorcycle subsequently became trapped beneath the moving vehicle and was dragged along the road.

Viral footage raises safety concerns

The video, which circulated widely on social media on September 28, shows a man holding onto the bonnet and front windscreen of the moving vehicle. A motorcycle can be seen caught near the front portion of the car and being dragged along the road, with sparks appearing as it makes contact with the road surface.

The footage triggered public criticism and questions about road safety, reckless driving and the initial police response.

According to police, officers were informed about the incident through an emergency call and reached the area. The parties initially reached a settlement, and no formal case was registered at that stage.

However, after the video went viral, senior traffic police officials took notice and ordered legal action.

Case registered

Rawalpindi Traffic Police have now registered a case at New Town Police Station on the complaint of Traffic Warden Wahid Akhlaq. The case includes Sections 279 and 427, relating to dangerous or negligent driving and causing damage, while further investigation is underway.

City Traffic Officer Rawalpindi Farhan Aslam directed the relevant officials to proceed against those responsible and ordered efforts to identify and trace the vehicle and its driver through available technical resources.

Police are also examining the circumstances that preceded the incident, including the initial collision and the subsequent movement of the black vehicle.

Questions over initial settlement

The initial settlement has become a major point of public discussion after the video emerged.

The footage has prompted questions over whether the incident should initially have been treated solely as a dispute between vehicle owners, particularly because a person was placed in an extremely dangerous position while the vehicle was moving and another motorcycle was dragged along the road.
