Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smartphone.
According to a report, the company has showcased a prototype of the AI device to investors and shareholders. The Wall Street Journal reported that the device is very slim and has a design similar to a conventional smartphone.
The report says the device will include standard smartphone features while placing a strong emphasis on AI-powered tools and capabilities. It further claims that SpaceX is working to bring AI hardware to mainstream consumers with the long-term goal of competing with Apple in the consumer technology market.
The AI device is still in the early stages of development. Unlike traditional smartphones, it is expected to run on a custom operating system instead of Android or iOS.
According to the report, the device will be powered by a Qualcomm processor and will integrate AI models developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company. The prototype is also said to reflect Musk’s vision of creating an “everything app” or super app combining multiple digital services into a single platform.
If launched, the device could serve as a central hub for messaging, digital payments, online shopping, ride-sharing, social networking and other everyday tasks. However, it is still unclear whether the report is accurate as Elon Musk has denied the claims.
If the report eventually proves to be true, SpaceX would join the growing list of companies developing AI-focused consumer devices. OpenAI has reportedly been working on similar AI hardware for some time while Apple is also said to be exploring AI-powered devices.
