British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three sexual assaults following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The 51-year-old entertainer was convicted on Thursday after a jury found him guilty of offences involving four women between 2004 and 2009. He now faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence.
Brand, who was once among Britain’s most prominent television and radio personalities, had denied all the charges. He maintained that the sexual encounters were consensual and rejected allegations of non-consensual behaviour.
Prosecutors told the court that Brand used his growing fame and influence to pursue women for sexual encounters without regard for their consent. They described him as manipulative and said he had exploited his celebrity status to gain access to women.
During the trial, six women gave evidence about their experiences. Their identities are protected by lifelong anonymity orders. The allegations included unwanted sexual touching and rape.
One complainant told the court that Brand had assaulted her shortly after meeting her at a party. Another woman, who had initially agreed to have sex with him, alleged that he removed a condom without her consent and subsequently raped her.
The jury also heard testimony about Brand’s behaviour during his rise to fame. His former personal assistant described his sexual appetite as excessive, while a former friend told the court that Brand had spoken about wanting to sleep with thousands of women.
However, Brand was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Following the verdict, the judge refused him bail and scheduled his sentencing for Monday. He could face a lengthy prison term.
The case relates to allegations that emerged publicly in 2023 following a television documentary and media reports in which several women made accusations against the comedian. The women involved in those earlier reports were not complainants in the criminal trial.
Police said their investigation into Brand was continuing. Authorities are also examining two other alleged rape cases, including one involving a girl who was 16 at the time.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said the conviction demonstrated that no individual was above the law, regardless of their fame or influence. Police also encouraged other potential victims to come forward.
Brand rose to prominence through comedy and television presenting before establishing himself as a Hollywood actor. He appeared in several films and became a regular figure in British entertainment during the 2000s.
In 2010, he married American pop star Katy Perry. Their marriage ended after 14 months. Brand later moved away from mainstream entertainment and developed a substantial social media following through commentary on politics, religion and spirituality.
The conviction has renewed scrutiny of how allegations of sexual misconduct involving high-profile figures are handled within the entertainment industry.
