Moscow has been selected to host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, marking a significant step towards Russia’s return to international sporting events following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced the decision alongside the selection of Ahmedabad, India, as the host city for the 2029 championships.
The decision makes Russia the first country to be awarded a world championship in an Olympic sport by an international governing body since the war began. Moscow last hosted the competition in 1983.
Russia’s return comes amid gradual changes in international sports policies concerning Russian and Belarusian athletes. However, restrictions remain in place, and the International Olympic Committee has not confirmed whether Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under their national flag and anthem at future Olympic Games.
Several international sporting events previously scheduled for Russia have been relocated since the invasion. The 2025 World Aquatics Championships, initially awarded to Kazan, were moved to Singapore.
Russian weightlifting officials welcomed the decision, describing it as an important achievement for the country’s sporting community. Federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov also expressed gratitude to the IWF, highlighting Moscow’s experience and infrastructure for hosting major international competitions.
The 2030 championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has challenged the IOC’s decision to lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The development represents a major milestone in Russia’s efforts to regain its position in international sports, although broader questions surrounding athlete participation and national representation remain unresolved.
