Advanced Russian drones that gained prominence during the Ukraine war are reportedly being deployed in new conflict zones, highlighting the growing role of unmanned technology in modern warfare.

Images and videos analysed by observers show the use of Russian-made drone systems, including the Lancet loitering munition and Zala Z-16 reconnaissance drone, in recent military operations.

The Lancet is a kamikaze drone developed by Zala Aero, a subsidiary of Russia’s Kalashnikov group. The weapon is designed to remain in the air, identify targets, and carry out precision strikes with the help of onboard cameras and operator guidance.

The drone has been widely used by Russian forces since 2020, particularly for targeting military equipment, including armoured vehicles and artillery positions.

Analysts said the deployment of such systems reflects Russia’s expanding use of battlefield-tested drone technology beyond its original combat environment.

The Zala Z-16 reconnaissance drone, which often operates alongside the Lancet, is designed to provide surveillance support. It helps identify targets and transmit their locations before attack drones are launched.

Experts noted that these drones were originally developed for conventional military operations but can be adapted for different battlefield conditions due to their surveillance and strike capabilities.

The increased use of advanced drones demonstrates how modern conflicts are becoming increasingly dependent on unmanned systems for intelligence gathering, target identification, and precision attacks.
