MAKKAH: One of the most cherished and spiritually uplifting traditions in the Islamic world unfolded in the heart of Makkah as the Holy Kaaba received its new Kiswa, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year with scenes of devotion, reverence and deep emotion.

The annual replacement of the Kaaba’s black silk covering is a moment eagerly awaited by Muslims around the world. This year’s ceremony once again transformed the atmosphere of Masjid al-Haram into a spectacle of faith and spirituality, drawing the attention of millions who followed the sacred event both in person and through broadcasts across the globe.

Under the supervision of the Grand Mosque’s administration, the newly crafted Kiswa was transported to the Holy Mosque in a carefully organized operation. A highly trained team of specialists from the Kiswa manufacturing complex, supported by mosque officials and workers, carried out the intricate process with exceptional precision and care.

The replacement of the Kiswa is not merely a logistical task but a symbolic act that reflects the honor and sanctity of Islam’s holiest site. Despite the large-scale operation, worship and Tawaf around the Kaaba continued uninterrupted. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and worshippers maintained their prayers and circumambulation, creating a breathtaking scene as the new Kiswa gradually enveloped the House of Allah.

The tradition of changing the Kiswa has undergone a notable adjustment in recent years. For decades, the ceremony was held on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, when pilgrims had departed for the plains of Arafat, reducing congestion in the Grand Mosque.

However, Saudi authorities later linked the historic event to the first day of Muharram, allowing Muslims worldwide to begin the new Hijri year with one of Islam’s most symbolic and inspiring ceremonies.
