Section 144 imposed across Punjab until October 5

LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province, with the restrictions coming into effect on Wednesday, September 23, and remaining in force until October 5.

The provincial Home Department issued a notification announcing the restrictions. The order prohibits the carrying and display of weapons at public places across Punjab.

The notification also bans gatherings of more than five people at public places, roads, highways and open spaces. People have also been barred from encouraging or provoking others to participate in unlawful gatherings.

According to the notification, the restrictions have been imposed in view of serious threats to public peace and the safety of citizens and their property.

However, the restrictions will not apply to certain religious and private activities. Weddings, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship have been exempted from the restrictions.

The Punjab government said the protection of the lives and property of citizens remained its top priority. The provincial authorities said the measures were aimed at maintaining public order and preventing situations that could pose a threat to public safety.

The imposition of Section 144 comes amid heightened security and political activity in the province. Authorities have also been taking additional security measures in anticipation of possible public gatherings and protests during the period covered by the notification.
