Actress Sharon Stone said Sydney Sweeney should “take responsibility” for her controversial sports betting advertisement for Novig, while stopping short of saying she should be judged for it.
Sweeney, known for her role in “Euphoria,” has faced criticism from female athletes over the campaign, in which she appears nude or partially nude while using sports equipment to cover herself in a series of provocative poses.
“I think that it’s up to her to take responsibility for her actions, not up to me to judge her for her actions,” Stone told PEOPLE at Variety’s Power of Women event in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
“It is up to me to be a cheerleader for the women who have made it through and become champions in women’s sports,” she added.
“We can’t denigrate women’s sports to get men’s attention so they can gamble,” Stone said.
Stone also recalled that, while she was in high school, she threatened to take legal action if she was not allowed to try out for the boys’ golf team because her school did not have girls’ sports teams.
“I had something to prove,” Stone said. She added that she ultimately “made the boys’ team.”
Stone’s comments came after several female athletes criticized Sweeney’s Novig campaign, accusing it of sexualizing women in sports.
The remarks mark a change in tone from Stone’s response to Sweeney’s 2025 American Eagle jeans campaign, which also sparked controversy.
At Variety’s Power of Women event in October 2025, Stone defended Sweeney, saying: “It’s okay to use what mama gave you. It’s really fine. It’s hard to be hot, and I think we all know that.”
She added that women should embrace their individual attractiveness and pursue their ambitions.
Stone, 68, is an American actress best known for films including “Basic Instinct,” “Casino” and “Total Recall.”
