South Korea edge Czech Republic 2-1 in World Cup opener

ZAPOPAN: South Korea began their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey with determination, drama and a late moment of brilliance as substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scored a decisive winner in a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic at Guadalajara Stadium on Friday.

In a match where the Asian giants controlled large stretches but struggled to convert dominance into goals, it was the impact from the bench that ultimately made the difference.

Led by captain Son Heung-min, South Korea looked sharp from the opening whistle. Their movement, pressing and possession kept the Czech Republic pinned back for long periods during the first half. Yet despite creating multiple openings, the breakthrough remained frustratingly out of reach.

Son himself came agonisingly close before halftime. First, the Tottenham forward sent an effort over the bar, then produced a dazzling run through the Czech defence only to pull his finish narrowly wide.

The missed chances nearly came back to haunt South Korea.

Against the flow of play, the Czech Republic stunned their opponents early in the second half. Defender Ladislav Krejci rose above everyone at the near post and powered a header into the net, giving the Europeans an unexpected lead and briefly silencing the Korean supporters.

Rather than panic, South Korea responded with intensity.

Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when midfielder Hwang In-beom produced a moment of class inside the penalty area. Showing patience and quick thinking, he sold a clever dummy before delicately lifting the ball beyond goalkeeper Matej Kovar to bring South Korea level.

Then came the game-changing move.

Moments after the equaliser, the Korean coaching staff replaced Son with striker Oh Hyeon-gyu — a decision that transformed the contest.

The Czech Republic thought they had restored their lead shortly afterward, but celebrations were cut short when the goal was ruled out.

With just ten minutes left, Oh timed his run perfectly and calmly slotted home the winner, completing South Korea’s comeback and sending their fans into celebration.

At full-time, Son collapsed onto the turf in relief and joy as South Korea secured a valuable three points and announced themselves as serious contenders from the very first match.

Earlier, co-hosts Mexico opened their campaign with an impressive 2-0 win over South Africa at Estadio Azteca.
