Stop the war before the Middle East burns

The latest escalation between the United States and Iran shows that the Middle East is closer to a wider and more dangerous war. Military action can quickly create consequences that no country can fully control. The reported US attacks on Iranian territory, particularly allegations of strikes that caused civilian casualties, deserve strong condemnation. Civilians must never become targets of war. Attacks on homes, public gatherings and other civilian locations violate the basic principles of humanity and must be independently investigated.

The reported attack on a wedding ceremony in Hormozgan is especially disturbing. A wedding should be a place of happiness, not a battlefield. If civilians were deliberately or unlawfully targeted, those responsible must be held accountable under international law. However, continued retaliation will not bring peace to Iran or the wider Middle East. Iran’s reported attacks on military positions across several regional countries have also increased the danger of a much wider conflict. Countries such as Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Iraq could be dragged into a war that they neither started nor desire.

The United States must understand that military superiority cannot solve every political problem. Bombs may destroy buildings and military installations, but they cannot create trust or establish lasting peace. Similarly, revenge and retaliation can only produce another cycle of violence.

Washington must stop actions that increase civilian suffering and avoid further military attacks on Iran. Tehran, too, must show restraint and prevent the conflict from spreading across the region.

The international community has an urgent responsibility to act. The United Nations, regional powers and major international actors should immediately encourage a ceasefire and meaningful dialogue.

The people of the Middle East have suffered from war for far too long. They deserve security, stability and the opportunity to build better lives.

There is no victory in a war that destroys entire societies and threatens the future of generations. The United States and Iran must step back from the brink.
