A timely call for cooperation and peace

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s message at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek deserves attention and support. At a time when the region faces growing political tensions, conflicts and economic uncertainty, Pakistan’s call for peace, cooperation and respect for international agreements is both timely and sensible.

His strongest message was perhaps his warning against using water as a tool of political pressure or coercion. Water is not merely a political or economic resource. For millions of people, it is essential for life, agriculture and economic survival. Countries sharing rivers and other water resources must therefore respect agreements governing their use. Turning water into a weapon can create serious tensions and threaten regional peace.

Pakistan has long believed that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means. Shehbaz Sharif’s emphasis on international law and the principles of the United Nations and the SCO reflects an approach that should be encouraged. In an increasingly divided world, dialogue remains a better option than confrontation.

The prime minister also highlighted Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and stability. His remarks about mediation and diplomatic efforts underline an important reality: Pakistan cannot remain isolated from conflicts in its neighbourhood. Peace in the wider region directly affects Pakistan’s economy, security and future.

His clarification about the recently signed Trilateral Mecca Joint Defence Agreement was equally important. By stressing that the agreement is defensive and not directed against any particular country, Pakistan has attempted to prevent unnecessary misunderstandings. Defence cooperation should provide security and stability rather than create new divisions.

The prime minister was also right to raise the continuing suffering of Palestinians. The international community cannot continue to ignore the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the wider Palestinian question. A just and lasting solution must recognise the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

Pakistan’s concerns about terrorism also deserve serious consideration. The country has suffered enormously in the fight against militancy, losing thousands of lives and bearing a massive economic cost. Its demand that no country’s territory should be used to launch attacks against another is based on a simple principle of international responsibility.

Looking ahead, Pakistan’s priorities as it assumes the SCO chairmanship appear promising. The focus on artificial intelligence, information technology, energy, poverty reduction, healthcare and disaster management addresses challenges that directly affect ordinary people.

The proposed framework for sovereign AI infrastructure is particularly forward-looking. Pakistan must not allow itself to fall behind as artificial intelligence reshapes economies and societies around the world.
