KARACHI: A brutal quadruple murder in Surjani Town has taken another dramatic turn after police killed the prime suspect in an encounter during an alleged attempt to recover the weapon used in the killings. While investigators say the suspect had confessed to murdering a woman and her three children, questions surrounding the motive and circumstances of the encounter remain.

The woman and her three minor children were found dead inside their home in Surjani Town, with police saying the victims had suffered fatal head injuries allegedly inflicted with an iron rod. Investigators described the attack as exceptionally violent, with multiple injuries reported on the victims.

The victims were discovered after neighbours became concerned when the house remained unusually quiet and the children’s father, Danish, was unable to contact his family. Police subsequently launched an investigation and identified Muhammad Humayun Khan as the principal suspect.

According to police, Humayun was known to the family and was related to Danish as his brother-in-law. Investigators said he had previously lived as a tenant in the upper portion of the same house but had been evicted by Danish around one-and-a-half years ago.

Police subsequently arrested Humayun and, according to officials, questioned him about the killings. During an earlier briefing, senior police officers said the suspect had confessed to killing the woman and her three children.

The case took another turn when police took the accused to a location for recovery of the alleged murder weapon.

SSP District West Tariq Elahi Mastoi told Minute Mirror that the accused allegedly seized an official pistol from a policeman while officers were searching for the iron rod and opened fire. According to the SSP, ASI Noman Sheikh was injured during the firing, prompting police to retaliate.

Mastoi said Humayun was killed during the exchange of fire and that police recovered the allegedly snatched official pistol as well as the iron rod from the scene. The injured police officer was shifted for medical treatment, while the suspect’s body was taken for medico-legal formalities.

DIG West Irfan Baloch, along with SSP West and SP Investigation West, had earlier briefed the media following the suspect’s arrest and outlined the initial findings of the investigation.

However, the suspect’s death has left a central question unanswered: what was the actual motive behind the killings?

Police have linked the suspect’s previous eviction from the property to the crime, but the reported 18-month gap between the eviction and the murders raises questions about whether another dispute or recent development triggered the alleged attack.

The possibility of a financial disagreement, a family dispute or a more recent confrontation has not been publicly established. Police have yet to disclose details that could conclusively explain why the woman and three children were allegedly targeted.

The circumstances have also raised questions about the evidentiary chain in the case. With the principal suspect now dead, investigators will have to rely heavily on forensic evidence, witness statements, call records and other material evidence to establish what happened and why.

The alleged recovery of the iron rod will also require forensic examination to determine whether it can be scientifically linked to the crime scene and the victims. Similarly, the circumstances surrounding the police encounter are expected to be examined through medical, ballistic and other available evidence.

The death of the suspect means that the allegations against him cannot be tested through a criminal trial. Any confession reportedly obtained during interrogation will therefore require careful scrutiny alongside independent forensic and documentary evidence.

The case has consequently moved beyond a conventional murder investigation and raised broader questions about police procedure, forensic investigation and accountability in encounters involving suspects accused of serious crimes.

For the bereaved family, the tragedy is devastating. Danish has lost his wife and three children in a single incident, while the deaths have left the community seeking answers about what led to the attack.

The investigation must now establish the complete sequence of events, including the circumstances preceding the murders, the relationship between the accused and the family, the precise motive, the forensic connection between the recovered weapon and the crime, and the circumstances in which the suspect was killed.

Four lives were lost inside a Surjani Town home. The alleged killer is also dead. Yet the central question remains unresolved: what drove the attack, and could the complete truth have been established through a transparent judicial process?

The recovery of the alleged weapon may provide evidence. The police encounter may have ended the suspect’s life. But the full story of the Surjani Town massacre still requires answers.
