Swiss Man grows World’s longest chilli

A gardener in Switzerland has once again made headlines after growing an exceptionally long chilli pepper and setting a new Guinness World Record.

Swiss gardener Jürg Wyss has broken his own record for the world’s longest chilli pepper for the third time.

His latest chilli measured an impressive 1 foot 8.6 inches (52.3 centimetres) making it longer than his previous record.

Wyss first entered the Guinness World Records in October 2017. During a vegetable growing competition one of his chilli peppers was measured at 1 foot 5.7 inches (45.9 centimetres).

At the time the unusually long vegetable earned him the world record.

However Wyss did not stop there. Just one year later, he managed to grow an even longer chilli. His second record breaking pepper measured 1 foot 7.9 inches (48.5 centimetres) allowing him to surpass his own previous achievement.

Now, his newest chilli has pushed the record even further. The pepper was officially measured on August 11, reaching a length of 1 foot 8.6 inches.

Speaking to Guinness World Records, Wyss explained that growing such unusually large peppers requires careful planning and regular attention.

He begins the growing process indoors in March using special grow lights to provide the plants with enough light. He keeps the temperature at around 28°C while the seeds begin to grow. Once the weather becomes warmer and the risk of harsh conditions has passed, Wyss moves the young chilli plants outdoors.

He usually transfers them to his garden toward the end of April, allowing them to continue growing naturally.

According to Wyss, preparing the soil is another important part of his method. He carefully loosens and works the soil before adding a generous amount of well prepared compost.

This provides nutrients that help the plants develop strongly. He also makes sure the plants receive enough water on a regular basis.

Along with watering he pays attention to providing balanced fertilizer so that the chilli plants get the nutrients they need throughout their growth.

Growing a record breaking vegetable is not simply a matter of planting a seed and waiting. It requires patience suitable growing conditions and consistent care.

Wyss’s repeated success shows how much effort can go into producing an unusually large vegetable.

His latest achievement has once again placed his name in the Guinness World Records and demonstrated his remarkable skill in growing giant chillies. For Wyss, breaking his own record three times is a remarkable achievement and a testament to his dedication to gardening.
