Toyota has tested its new GR86 Future FR Concept in Japan’s Super Taikyu racing series. The experimental sports car features a new 2.0-litre engine that could offer a glimpse of the company’s future sports car technology.
Unlike the previous turbocharged engine the new model uses a naturally aspirated four cylinder engine. This means the engine takes in air without the help of a turbocharger.
New Engine Offers Around 220 Horsepower
The new engine known by the code name G20E, produces around 220 horsepower. It is part of Toyota’s new family of smaller and lighter engines.
The lighter engine helps reduce the weight at the front of the car. It may also improve the accelerator response because there is no turbo lag, which is the delay that can occur when a turbocharger takes time to deliver extra power.
Better handling and performance
Toyota has also equipped the concept car with double-wishbone suspension at both the front and rear. This setup is designed to improve handling and help the car stay stable during sharp turns.
According to Kazuya Oshima, a driver for Toyota’s Gazoo Racing team, the new engine can reach higher RPMs than expected. This suggests that the engine may offer an exciting driving experience.
Could this engine power future GR86 models?
Japanese media reports say Toyota has internally named the experimental car Leon. However the company has not yet officially announced which engine will be used in the next-generation GR86.
The concept is part of Toyota’s efforts to develop new engine technology for future sports cars. Its performance and design may provide useful clues about what drivers can expect from the company’s upcoming models.
For now it remains unclear whether the new 2.0-litre engine will be used in a production version of the next GR86.
