Trump says Iran ‘overplayed’ its hand as talks loom

US President Donald Trump has said he expects further discussions with Iran this week, while warning that Tehran has not yet offered terms acceptable to Washington.

Trump said US representatives were likely to participate in talks in the coming days. He added that Iran wanted an agreement but was seeking terms that the US would not accept.

“They overplayed their hand,” Trump said, arguing that Tehran’s current position differed from what Washington might have accepted a year earlier.

Trump also said the possibility of renewed US military action against Iran remained on the table. His comments came amid continuing tensions between the two countries after months of conflict.

The latest developments follow indirect diplomatic contacts held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reportedly met US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner through Qatari mediation.

Iran had reportedly proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations within a week. Tehran’s reported conditions included lifting the US naval blockade, removing restrictions on Iranian oil sales and restoring a regional ceasefire.

Trump rejected the proposal on Saturday, according to reports. The two countries remain involved in a prolonged conflict that began after major US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.

Meanwhile, tensions escalated further after Iran said its Revolutionary Guards Navy had seized a US underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media reported that the Guards captured a US-made Remus 600 autonomous underwater vehicle. Iranian authorities claimed the drone was conducting intelligence operations in the strategic waterway.

The Revolutionary Guards said the vehicle was captured using intelligence and electronic warfare capabilities. Iranian specialists were reportedly examining the drone and attempting to retrieve information stored on it.

The development adds another point of tension between Tehran and Washington as diplomatic contacts continue.

Iranian army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia also said the country’s armed forces were prepared for any renewed US military action.

He warned that Iran would respond to another attack and claimed the United States would face greater damage if it launched a fresh offensive.

The latest statements from both sides highlight the continuing uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and prevent further military escalation in the region.
