PARIS: US President Donald Trump has said that the recently announced memorandum of understanding with Iran is not a final agreement and warned that military action could resume if a final deal fails to meet US expectations.
Speaking to reporters during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Trump stressed that negotiations with Iran remain ongoing and that the current understanding is only a preliminary framework.
The US president said that if he is not satisfied with the terms of a final agreement, the United States could return to military action. He emphasized that the proposed arrangement is intended to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
Trump claimed that the agreement would lead to the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for oil and gas exports. He described the understanding with Tehran as an important diplomatic achievement and said it had helped stabilize global markets.
According to Trump, stock markets have reacted positively while oil prices have declined amid hopes of a lasting settlement. He argued that failure to reach an agreement could have triggered significant economic pressure across the world.
The US president also rejected reports suggesting that a $300 billion investment or reconstruction fund for Iran is part of the agreement. He stated that the United States will not invest in Iran and clarified that no American funding commitment is included in the current framework.
Trump further said that the memorandum does not provide immediate sanctions relief for Tehran. He noted that discussions regarding any future easing of sanctions would take place at a later stage and would depend on Iran’s compliance with the terms of a final agreement.
Addressing regional security issues, Trump said he had spoken with Syrian leadership regarding efforts to counter Hezbollah and broader stability concerns in the Middle East.
During the meeting, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi congratulated Trump on what he described as a diplomatic breakthrough aimed at promoting peace in the region. Sisi said Egypt is looking forward to the successful conclusion of a comprehensive and lasting agreement between Washington and Tehran.
