The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving what the White House calls “super intelligence,” following a summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

WASHINGTON: The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving what the White House calls “super intelligence,” following a summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

The two countries also established a U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue to exchange views on the risks and benefits of the emerging technology, according to a White House fact sheet issued Friday.

The next exchange is due to take place by November 2026. The White House said the two sides also agreed to establish the bilateral channel for incidents involving SI.

The leaders agreed to use the term “super intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence” for the applicable emerging technologies, according to the White House.

Trump had promoted the term “super intelligence” in a post on his Truth Social account before the summit, saying it would be a major topic of discussion.

Artificial intelligence was among the issues discussed by Trump and Xi during their talks, alongside trade and other bilateral and global issues. Reuters reported that the summit produced an eight-point consensus that included the new AI dialogue.

The White House has previously said Trump wants the United States to maintain a leading position in AI and has emphasized technological development.

The agreement follows earlier US-China discussions on AI safety and emergency communication mechanisms. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that officials from both countries had agreed to establish a formal dialogue on AI risks and an “incident line” for communicating safety issues.
