A senior US State Department official has highlighted the importance of US-Pakistan diplomatic ties, Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy, and the value of cultural connections during an interaction with journalists in London.

Speaking outside the US Embassy in London, the US diplomat discussed a range of issues, including NATO developments, tensions with Iran, Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, and her personal experience of learning Urdu and visiting Pakistan.

While discussing NATO affairs, the official said the recent summit reaffirmed the commitment to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack against one member would be considered an attack against all. She added that discussions also focused on global security challenges, including the situations in Ukraine and Iran, along with strengthening defence cooperation among allied countries.

On Iran, the diplomat reiterated Washington’s position that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons. She also stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a key international trade route.

Regarding the possibility of a ceasefire and diplomatic talks, she said discussions were continuing and that the United States had several options available. However, she avoided commenting on specific military strategies or operations.

Talking about Pakistan’s role, the official said diplomatic contacts between Washington and Islamabad were continuing at multiple levels. She acknowledged Pakistan’s involvement in regional diplomacy, particularly efforts related to reducing tensions between the United States and Iran.

She said President Donald Trump had appreciated Pakistan’s leadership and its contribution to diplomatic efforts, describing constructive dialogue as a positive step toward resolving conflicts.

The diplomat also shared personal experiences related to Pakistan. She revealed that she started learning Urdu while preparing for a visa-related assignment at the US Embassy in Islamabad and has continued practicing the language.

Recalling her visit to Pakistan last August, she described Karachi as a beautiful city and said the trip was a valuable experience. When asked about Pakistani cuisine, she mentioned that she particularly enjoyed kebabs.

She also praised the Pakistani community in the United Kingdom, saying that South Asian communities are known for their hospitality and gave her a warm welcome.

During the conversation, she expressed appreciation for the positive interaction with the community and said such people-to-people connections help strengthen relations between countries.

The official concluded by emphasizing the importance of cooperation with international partners to promote regional stability and maintain diplomatic engagement.
