The United States has withdrawn all of its B-1B bombers from a British airbase following heightened security concerns over a suspected terrorist plot targeting the facility.
The Pentagon confirmed that the aircraft deployed at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire have returned to their home stations in the United States. The base, located northwest of London, had been hosting around a dozen US B-1 bombers.
The withdrawal came about a week after British authorities arrested several men near the airbase on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act. Security measures around the facility were subsequently increased.
The bombers had been used by the United States for military operations against Iranian targets. Britain had permitted Washington to operate the aircraft from Fairford during its campaign against Iranian missile sites involved in attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
British authorities have also raised concerns about possible foreign involvement in the suspected plot. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were strong indications that Iran may have been connected to the alleged plan.
Tehran has rejected the accusation, calling claims linking Iran to the suspected plot baseless. Iranian authorities also summoned the British ambassador in Tehran over the allegations.
US President Donald Trump said those behind the alleged plan had intended to cause significant damage. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested that a foreign actor may have been involved.
The Pentagon said operational security prevented it from confirming the movement of its aircraft while the relocation was taking place. However, officials have now acknowledged that all B-1 bombers previously stationed at Fairford have been redeployed to bases in the United States.
The decision comes as tensions remain high over US and British military operations involving Iran and growing concerns about threats to military facilities and personnel.
