A suspect wanted in the brutal killing of a mother and her infant son in the Matni area of Peshawar was killed during a police encounter, officials said on Thursday.

PESHAWAR: A suspect wanted in the brutal killing of a mother and her infant son in the Matni area of Peshawar was killed during a police encounter, officials said on Thursday.

According to police, the accused was involved in the murder of a woman and her seven-month-old child in the Pasni area of Matni on June 29. The victims were allegedly killed along with accomplices and their bodies were later dumped into a well.

Police identified the deceased suspect as Sikandar alias “Lamba,” son of Alauddin, who was reportedly involved in multiple serious criminal cases, including murder and sabotage-related activities.

Officials said that during an operation in the Akhun Baba graveyard area of Maryamzai, police came into contact with the suspects. In the ensuing exchange of fire, the wanted suspect was killed due to firing by his own accomplices, police added.

Following the encounter, a search operation was launched to apprehend other members of the group who managed to escape from the scene. Law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the surrounding areas and intensified efforts to trace the fugitives.

Police said the suspect had been on the most-wanted list for his involvement in several heinous crimes, and his death is considered a significant development in ongoing efforts to curb serious criminal activity in the region.

Further investigations are underway to identify and arrest the remaining suspects involved in the case. Authorities have vowed to bring all those responsible for the double murder to justice.
