Xi reiterates China’s call for two-state solution

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China’s support for a political solution to the Middle East

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China’s support for a political solution to the Middle East crisis, with the Palestinian issue at the centre of efforts to achieve lasting peace.

Xi made the remarks during talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Beijing on Monday. The Jordanian monarch was concluding a week-long state visit to China.

The Chinese president called for renewed negotiations between Palestine and Israel based on the two-state solution. He said efforts should also focus on establishing an independent Palestinian state at an early stage.

Xi stressed that China supports a comprehensive ceasefire and an end to hostilities. He said regional disputes should be addressed through political and diplomatic means.

He also emphasised respect for the sovereignty and security of countries across the region, including Jordan.

According to Xi, the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine” should remain central to efforts concerning the future of the West Bank and the reconstruction of Gaza.

He also called for greater international efforts to protect civilians. The Chinese president said the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, should help ensure humanitarian assistance reaches people in need and prevent further humanitarian suffering.

Xi urged all sides to respect international law and work toward a fair, comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Palestinian issue.

He also praised Jordan’s role in regional affairs and said China supports the country in protecting its sovereignty, security and development interests.

King Abdullah welcomed China’s position on the Middle East. He praised Beijing for supporting what he described as the legitimate interests of Arab countries.

The Jordanian king said his country was ready to maintain close communication with China. He also expressed support for efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and creating conditions for peace and prosperity.

The talks also covered the growing relationship between China and Jordan. Xi said the two countries had developed relations based on mutual respect, equality and cooperation since establishing diplomatic ties.

He called for stronger cooperation in areas including trade, infrastructure, transportation and minerals. China also wants to expand cooperation with Jordan in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital technology and green energy.

The two leaders also discussed stronger coordination through international institutions, including the United Nations.

Following the talks, China and Jordan witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements covering diplomacy, trade, supply chains and judicial cooperation.

The two sides also issued a joint statement aimed at further strengthening their strategic partnership.
