AL DHALE, YEMEN: A Yemeni free climber known across social media as the “Spider-Man of Yemen” has died after falling into a volcanic crater while attempting one of his most dangerous climbs, bringing a tragic end to a life defined by extraordinary risk and determination.
Al‑Qa’qa’ bin Antar, 30, reportedly lost his footing on Friday while climbing the towering Haradhat Damt volcanic crater in Yemen’s southern province of Al Dhale. The crater, which rises approximately 120 meters (394 feet), is considered one of the region’s most challenging natural formations.
The climber had gained widespread recognition online for scaling steep cliffs, mountains and volcanic structures without ropes, harnesses or other safety equipment. His breathtaking videos attracted thousands of followers, who admired both his courage and remarkable climbing ability.
According to local reports, bin Antar was attempting another daring ascent when the accident occurred. Videos circulating on social media appear to capture the moment he lost his grip before plunging into the crater below.
Rescue efforts began immediately but were complicated by the hazardous terrain, steep rock walls and difficult access inside the volcanic formation. Civil defence teams launched an extensive recovery operation involving specialized rescue crews, diving units, lighting equipment and water-rescue resources.
After nearly 24 hours of searching, emergency responders recovered his body on Saturday, ending a mission that had drawn significant public attention across Yemen and beyond.
Bin Antar’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, where many followers remembered him as a fearless adventurer who inspired others with his determination to overcome hardship. Reports suggest that he often spoke about poverty and limited economic opportunities, explaining that his dangerous climbing exploits were partly motivated by a desire to earn income and support himself.
His story resonated with many Yemenis facing difficult living conditions amid years of conflict and economic challenges. Through his videos, he transformed rugged mountains and volcanic landscapes into stages for extraordinary displays of human endurance.
While his daring feats earned admiration, the tragedy has also renewed discussion about the risks associated with extreme climbing without protective equipment.
For many supporters, however, Al-Qa’qa’ bin Antar will be remembered not only for his breathtaking climbs but also for the perseverance and courage that turned him into one of Yemen’s most recognizable social media personalities.
His death marks the loss of a unique adventurer whose remarkable journeys captivated audiences far beyond Yemen’s borders.
