A major scandal involving the alleged manipulation of intermediate examination marks for MBBS admissions has come to light in Sindh, raising serious questions about the transparency of the medical college admission process.
Two major public-sector medical universities in the province, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, and Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), Karachi, have identified a total of 53 suspicious marks sheets submitted by candidates seeking admission. Significant discrepancies were found between the marks recorded on these documents and the official results published in the respective educational boards’ gazettes.
According to sources, 43 suspicious marks sheets were identified at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, while seven were detected at Jinnah Sindh Medical University. These documents reportedly belonged to candidates registered with the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Hyderabad.
Sources have expressed concerns that a comprehensive verification of candidates’ marks sheets against official gazettes at all medical universities could uncover further cases of alleged manipulation and irregularities.
Highly informed sources told that unusual differences had emerged between the marks recorded on certain candidates’ marks sheets and those published in the official gazette of the Hyderabad Board for the 2026 annual intermediate pre-medical examinations.
In some cases, candidates’ overall marks were allegedly increased by 50 to 100 under the pretext of scrutiny. The alleged changes could significantly affect the merit rankings for admission to medical colleges, potentially depriving deserving candidates of their places.
According to sources, the scrutiny process was reportedly carried out while Hyderabad Board Chairman Faqir Muhammad Lakho was abroad to perform Umrah.
The development has raised several questions about who authorised such a large number of changes in the chairman’s absence, which officials processed the scrutiny applications and whether the board’s prescribed rules and regulations were followed.
Sources further said complaints regarding alleged manipulation and irregularities in the 2026 annual Intermediate Part-II examination results had already emerged at the Hyderabad Board. Deputy Controller of the Top Secret Branch, Ijaz Ali Kaka, has also been suspended in connection with the matter.
Meanwhile, concerns have also been raised over possible alterations in marks sheets issued by the Mirpurkhas Board. Sources said that despite requests from universities responsible for MBBS admissions, the original result gazettes were reportedly not being provided to them. This has created difficulties in independently verifying candidates’ academic records.
Meanwhile, no suspicious marks sheets have so far been reported at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University in Larkana, the third major public-sector medical university involved in MBBS admissions in Sindh.
However, sources have also questioned the university’s system for verifying marks sheets, raising concerns about the overall transparency and effectiveness of the admission process.
