After 286 days at sea, 5,000 US troops get a Pattaya break

PATTAYA, Thailand: After spending nearly 10 months at sea amid military operations in the Middle East, around 5,000 US military personnel aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln have arrived in Thailand for a five-day break — and many are wasting little time enjoying some of the comforts they have missed.

The troops reached Pattaya after the carrier’s long deployment, during which personnel reportedly spent 286 days at sea while supporting US military operations in the Middle East and amid the conflict involving Iran.

For many sailors and other personnel, the arrival in Thailand has offered a rare opportunity to step away from the confined environment of the carrier and reconnect with everyday life.

According to a report by The Guardian, troops heading into Pattaya have been visiting shops and restaurants, getting massages, buying gifts and even taking time for nail treatments.

Some service members reportedly said they were particularly interested in buying new socks and presents for their wives, highlighting the simple comforts they had been missing during their lengthy deployment.

The break comes after months of demanding conditions aboard the carrier. The deployment had also prompted scrutiny over living conditions and the mental wellbeing of personnel. Reports during the deployment included concerns about suicide attempts among some service members.

The carrier’s captain acknowledged that the crew had faced shortages of fresh fruit and vegetables during the prolonged period at sea. However, he rejected some reports describing conditions aboard the ship as severely deteriorated, calling them exaggerated.

Now in Pattaya, the sailors have become a major source of attention for local businesses. Known internationally for its tourism industry and vibrant nightlife, the Thai resort city has adjusted to the sudden arrival of thousands of American visitors.

Local tailors are reportedly offering to make clothes within 24 hours, while some restaurants are providing special discounts to military personnel.

Major international fast-food and clothing brands have also reportedly seen increased business, although not every small business has benefited equally from the influx.

Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet estimated that if each American service member spends between $100 and $150 a day, the five-day visit could inject roughly 100 million Thai baht, or about $3 million, into the local economy.

For the troops, however, the trip is about more than spending money. After months of ships, missions and long stretches away from home, five days on land offer a chance to rest, shop, eat familiar food and simply breathe.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is expected to continue its deployment after the scheduled Thailand visit, but for thousands of sailors, Pattaya has provided a much-needed pause after one of their longest stretches at sea.
