Balochistan rich in resources but poor in opportunities

From my perspective, Balochistan is the richest and largest province of Pakistan. It is home to vast natural resources, including gold, diamonds, petroleum, and natural gas, which have the potential to significantly contribute to the economy of the country. Despite its wealth in resources, however, the people of Balochistan face serious social and economic challenges that continue to affect their lives every day.

‎One of the most pressing problems in the province is electricity load shedding. Many areas experience long hours without electricity, which not only affects daily life but also hinders development and business activities. Alongside this, unemployment is a major concern. The youth of Balochistan, despite their talent and energy, often cannot find proper jobs. This lack of opportunities is driving many young people toward negative paths, leaving them frustrated and hopeless.

‎Another critical issue is the scarcity of clean water. In several districts, access to safe drinking water is limited, forcing people to travel long distances to collect water or rely on unsafe sources. This has serious health implications, especially for children. Additionally, the education system in Balochistan is facing severe inequalities. Schools are often under-resourced, and many children, particularly in rural areas, do not have access to quality education. As a result, illiteracy remains high, limiting future opportunities for the younger generation.

‎One of the most significant problems affecting the people of Balochistan today is the closure of the border. Border trade has traditionally been a lifeline for many families in the province. Due to very few local job opportunities, many people depend on work related to trade at the border to earn a living and fulfill their basic needs. Unfortunately, the border has been closed for the past two months, creating even greater hardship for these families. If the border remains closed, the economic situation in Balochistan will worsen, leaving families struggling to survive.

‎Despite these challenges, some journalists and leaders claim that Baloch people are involved in smuggling at the border. I strongly disagree with this portrayal. Many people are simply working hard as laborers or small traders to support their families. The reality is far from the image often shown in the media. The picture I shared clearly illustrates this truth: it shows an elderly man who is physically disabled yet forced to work as a laborer to provide for his family. This image reflects the struggles of ordinary people who are simply trying to live a decent life and earn an honest living. For God’s sake, whether they are working as laborers or engaged in small trade, they are striving to survive—not smuggling as some claim.

‎Balochistan’s problems extend beyond poverty and unemployment. The province suffers from overpopulation in some areas, inadequate infrastructure, and very limited industrial development. There are hardly any factories or businesses where local people can find steady work. Without proper attention to development, Balochistan remains underdeveloped, and its people continue to struggle.

‎I sincerely request the Government of Pakistan to urgently address these issues. Balochistan has enormous potential, and with proper attention and support, it can thrive. The government should focus on reopening the border, creating job opportunities, improving education, and ensuring access to electricity and clean water. By taking these steps, the lives of millions of Baloch people can improve, and the province can truly become a valuable contributor to the nation’s progress.

‎Balochistan is not just rich in resources—it is rich in its people, culture, and potential. But without urgent action, the hardships faced by its citizens will continue to grow. I hope that policymakers, journalists, and leaders take the real situation seriously and work together to bring development, peace, and prosperity to this beautiful province. The people of Balochistan deserve nothing less.
