In the book, Earl Spencer claims that the then-Prince of Wales told him, “We’ll forget her soon enough,” during a conversation about whether Prince William and Prince Harry should walk behind their mother’s coffin during her funeral procession.

In a strongly worded statement, Buckingham Palace previously said the King was “mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”

According to the BBC, Diana’s brother has stood by his account of a phone call with Charles in the days following his sister’s death.

“I can tell you here and now, those are exactly the words he said,” Spencer said.

Responding to the Palace’s statement, Spencer questioned whether Charles was “furious” or “embarrassed” by his account.

“I’ve only ever had two calls on the line with Prince Charles at any stage of my life,” Spencer said.

“I was hyper-alert to what he was saying, and those are precisely the words that he said. And I promise that to you now. Genuinely, that is what he said. I don’t hear him saying he didn’t say that.”

Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on Spencer’s latest remarks.
