Pakistan and Brazil have agreed to expand military cooperation and deepen defence ties following a high-level meeting between their senior military officials at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Monday.
Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir met a Brazilian delegation led by Admiral Renato Rodrigues De Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Brazil’s Armed Forces.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, regional security developments and opportunities to enhance bilateral defence and security cooperation.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the longstanding friendly relations between Pakistan and Brazil. They also agreed to strengthen military-to-military engagement and explore further avenues for collaboration.
Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to developing stronger defence relations with Brazil. Admiral Freire, meanwhile, praised the professionalism and operational preparedness of the Pakistan Armed Forces and acknowledged their role in promoting regional peace and stability.
The visiting Brazilian admiral was also accorded a guard of honour by a smartly turned-out contingent representing Pakistan’s three armed services upon his arrival at GHQ.
The visit reflects efforts by Islamabad and Brasilia to expand their defence partnership and strengthen military engagement. Beyond defence, the two countries have also explored opportunities to increase bilateral trade and improve economic cooperation.
In 2018, then-Brazilian ambassador Claudio Raja Gabaglia Lins visited the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Peshawar. Discussions at the time focused on boosting trade, facilitating investors and establishing a joint chamber of commerce and industry.
The latest high-level military engagement marks another step towards strengthening Pakistan-Brazil relations, with both countries expressing their willingness to deepen cooperation in defence and security.
