CM Maryam Nawaz orders crackdown on corrupt police officers

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered a large-scale crackdown against corrupt police officers and officials across the province.

According to directives issued by the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office, all Regional Police Officers (RPOs) and District Police Officers (DPOs) have been instructed to immediately identify police personnel involved in corruption in their respective districts and take appropriate action against them.

Strict action against officers for negligence

According to an official document obtained by Minute Mirror, the Chief Minister’s Office has made it clear that negligence or non-compliance in taking action against elements involved in corruption will not be tolerated.

The directives state that all RPOs and DPOs must identify personnel involved in corruption within their respective ranks and initiate appropriate action against them.

Under the instructions, officers responsible for failing to take action against such elements or showing negligence in implementing the orders will also face strict disciplinary proceedings.

Daily district-wise reports to be submitted to CM

The Chief Minister has sought daily district-wise reports to monitor the action. According to the order, details of action taken against corrupt personnel in each district will be submitted to the Chief Minister on a daily basis enabling her to directly review progress across all districts of the province.

Zero-tolerance policy in police

According to sources, the latest directives issued by CM Maryam Nawaz are part of a zero-tolerance policy against corruption in government institutions particularly the police department.

A senior official of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat said Maryam Nawaz was serious about eliminating corrupt elements from the police system and that all officers had been clearly informed that negligence at any level would not be tolerated.

According to sources, the Chief Minister’s Office will review the reports received daily at the district level and monitor progress in the action being taken.

Action accelerated following public complaints

Complaints have repeatedly emerged against certain police personnel regarding bribery, alleged misuse of authority and providing illegal facilities to citizens. The Punjab government has recently taken several measures aimed at improving public services, police reforms and accountability.

Following the latest directives, RPOs and DPOs have been given direct responsibility for taking action against personnel under their command. In case of negligence, the concerned officers themselves may also face disciplinary action. The orders have been forwarded to all relevant police formations across the province for immediate implementation.
