Court seeks NCCIA reply on plea for FIR against Maulana Fazlur Rehman

A sessions court in Lahore on Tuesday sought a reply from the Director of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on a petition seeking the registration of a criminal case against Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman over his alleged controversial remarks about the country’s martyrs.

Additional Sessions Judge Malik Latif issued the direction while hearing the petition filed by citizen Muhammad Waqar. The court adjourned further proceedings until August 17.

The petitioner’s counsel, Advocates Mudassar Chaudhry and Ali Shan Manawan, argued that a speech allegedly delivered by Maulana Fazlur Rehman against the martyrs had been circulated on social media and had deeply hurt the sentiments of the petitioner and the general public.

According to the petition, the JUI-F chief made derogatory remarks about the martyrs during a public gathering, causing distress to the families of those who had sacrificed their lives for the country.

The petitioner maintained that the alleged speech had offended public sentiment and requested the court to direct the relevant authorities to register an FIR against Maulana Fazlur Rehman in accordance with the law.

After hearing the preliminary arguments, the court called for a response from the Director of the NCCIA and adjourned the matter until August 17.
