Ed Sheeran addresses Gaza controversy as fans rally behind singer

Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding his tour and rapper Macklemore during his Philadelphia concert, telling fans that he had made mistakes and apologising as the debate over comments on Gaza continued.

The concert at Lincoln Financial Field marked Sheeran’s first performance since Macklemore was removed from the tour after saying “Free Palestine” during a show earlier this month. Other opening acts later withdrew from the tour in solidarity with the rapper.

Speaking to the audience, Sheeran said he had generally tried to stay away from political commentary but felt he could no longer remain silent. He described Hamas’ October 7 attack as horrific and said the situation in Gaza was catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate.

The singer also said he was speaking with people about ways to help those affected by the conflict. He acknowledged that he was still learning about the issue and did not claim to have all the answers.

Fans outside the Philadelphia stadium offered mixed views on the controversy, although several said the dispute had not changed their support for Sheeran.

Some concertgoers said they supported both Sheeran and Macklemore and preferred to focus on their music. Others argued that political statements at concerts could create unnecessary controversy.

Meanwhile, dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered near the venue before the concert. Organisers said they wanted to raise awareness about conditions in Gaza and promote local organisations supporting Palestinians.

Macklemore has said that he was removed from Sheeran’s tour after calling for Palestinian freedom during a September 4 performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

He later claimed that several stadium owners had indicated Sheeran could face restrictions if Macklemore remained part of the tour. Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, confirmed that Macklemore would not perform at Sheeran’s upcoming shows at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.

Macklemore said he believed speaking about Palestine was worthwhile even if it cost him performances.

Sheeran previously said the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour promoter. He also said he had personal views about the conflict but had tried to keep his concerts from becoming political forums.
