England lose captain Buttler ahead of Pakistan tri-series

LONDON: England have suffered a major setback ahead of their upcoming tour of Pakistan, with white-ball captain and star wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler ruled out of next month’s ODI tri-series because of a hamstring injury.

Buttler picked up the injury during England’s match against Sri Lanka at Headingley. The experienced batter briefly returned to the crease after initially suffering the setback but was unable to continue, raising concerns over his fitness ahead of England’s busy international schedule.

England’s team management is now assessing the severity of the injury, with Buttler’s participation in the team’s November tour of Australia also reported to be in doubt.

The absence of Buttler is likely to create an opportunity for Jordan Cox to take on greater responsibility behind the stumps while also establishing himself in England’s middle order.

Cox recently provided England with an encouraging performance against Sri Lanka, scoring 76 off 52 deliveries in the decisive match. The innings included his first ODI half-century and strengthened his case for an extended run in the side.

England head coach Brendon McCullum said injuries to key players can also provide an opportunity to assess the squad’s depth ahead of major tournaments.

McCullum stressed the importance of planning for potential difficulties and ensuring that England have capable alternatives available when regular players are unavailable.

Buttler’s injury comes at an important stage for England as they prepare for the Pakistan tri-series and look ahead to future international commitments. His leadership, wicketkeeping and aggressive batting have made him a central figure in England’s white-ball setup.

England will now have to adjust their plans for the Pakistan assignment without their regular captain and wicketkeeper.

The ODI tri-series featuring England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from October 18 to 31, with matches planned in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

While England await further clarity on Buttler’s recovery, the upcoming series could give Cox and other squad members a valuable chance to demonstrate their readiness for bigger responsibilities.
