Ian Somerhalder reveals why he walked away from Hollywood after Netflix setback

Ian Somerhalder has finally opened up about the real reason he stepped away from Hollywood, revealing that the cancellation of his Netflix series V Wars played a major role in his decision to leave acting behind. The The Vampire Diaries star, who officially exited the entertainment industry in 2019, says the experience changed the way he viewed his career and ultimately led him to pursue a completely different life with his wife, Nikki Reed.  

Speaking on the Haley on the Go podcast, Somerhalder admitted that his decision to quit acting was sparked by what he described as a “controversial” situation surrounding V Wars. The actor explained that he had poured his heart into the Netflix series, not only starring in it but also serving as an executive producer. However, he was devastated when the finished product failed to reflect the creative vision he and his team had worked so hard to achieve.  

Determined to save the show, Somerhalder claimed he and producing partner James Gibb personally raised more than $6 million to film additional scenes after Netflix declined to provide extra funding. He said the demanding schedule pushed him to the limit, even landing him in the hospital due to exhaustion. Despite their efforts, V Wars was canceled after just one season, leaving the actor frustrated with what he described as behind-the-scenes executive conflicts.  

Reflecting on the experience, Somerhalder said he realized he no longer wanted his future to depend on decisions made by studio executives. Looking back at his career, he decided it was time to walk away from Hollywood and focus on a more meaningful lifestyle. The actor recalled looking in the mirror and telling himself he did not want to spend years investing everything into projects that could disappear because of circumstances beyond his control.  

After leaving Los Angeles, Somerhalder and Nikki Reed relocated to a farm in California, where they now live with their two children. Instead of pursuing acting, the couple has dedicated themselves to business ventures centered on sustainability, regenerative agriculture, and environmental advocacy. The actor has frequently spoken about finding greater fulfillment in this quieter lifestyle than he ever experienced in Hollywood.  

Although acting is largely behind him, Somerhalder has not completely ruled out returning to the screen. He recently revealed that he has regained the rights to V Wars, though he admitted he is uncertain whether the project will ever be revived. For now, his priorities remain firmly rooted in family life, entrepreneurship, and environmental work rather than chasing another television role.  

Somerhalder’s candid remarks offer a rare glimpse into the realities of Hollywood, where creative ambitions can sometimes clash with business decisions. While fans continue to remember him as Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries, the actor says he has no regrets about choosing a different path—one focused on purpose, family, and life beyond the spotlight.
