Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro has reportedly set a Guinness World Record after surviving a fall from more than 100,000 feet above the ground during an unusual test.
According to reports the phone was placed inside RhinoShield’s new Air-X phone case and carried by a balloon into the stratosphere above Kiruna, Sweden.
The iPhone was dropped from a height of 100,418 feet (30,607 meters) which is more than three times the usual flying height of passenger planes. The phone spent about 25 minutes falling through the atmosphere where temperatures dropped to around -60°C. Surprisingly it had no parachute heating system or special landing cushion.
The iPhone eventually landed in a frozen lake in a difficult to reach area. A search and rescue team found it about five hours later.
RhinoShield said the phone was still in excellent condition. Its screen and body had no visible scratches and the device was still switched on and able to make calls.
