Justin Bieber opens up about rare nerve disorder

Canadian singer Justin Bieber has spoken openly about his experience with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a rare condition that temporarily affected movement on one side of his face and forced him to step away from his busy performance schedule.

Bieber revealed his diagnosis in June 2022 after cancelling several shows during his Justice World Tour. He told fans that the condition had caused partial facial paralysis and affected his ability to perform.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a neurological disorder caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. The virus can remain dormant in the body after a person has had chickenpox or shingles and may reactivate years later.

The condition can affect the facial nerve and may cause facial weakness or paralysis. Some patients can also experience hearing problems, dizziness or vertigo. Many people recover with appropriate treatment, although recovery time can vary.

Bieber continued working on his recovery through facial exercises and physical therapy designed to support movement and nerve function. In March 2023, he gave fans an update by sharing a video showing that movement on his face had significantly improved.

The singer has since regained facial mobility and gradually returned to music. His experience also led him to adopt a more cautious approach to his workload and wellbeing.

Bieber has spoken about the physical and emotional demands of touring and the importance of allowing himself time to rest. He has continued making music while placing greater emphasis on his personal life, health and family.

Medical experts note that recovery from Ramsay Hunt syndrome is generally possible, but some patients can experience lasting effects. These may include facial asymmetry or synkinesis, a condition involving involuntary facial movements.
