KARACHI: The health of Madhubala a female elephant at Karachi Safari Park has deteriorated after swelling developed in her right hind thigh leaving her unable to properly use the affected leg.

According to the Safari Park administration the elephant experienced a sudden health problem on Tuesday and collapsed. Staff subsequently managed to get her back on her feet with the help of a crane.

Veterinary teams have been examining Madhubala to determine the cause of the condition. Medical tests have already been carried out while veterinarians are closely monitoring her health.

A veterinary expert said Madhubala is currently receiving medication including antibiotics because a bacterial infection is among the possible causes of the swelling. However, the expert cautioned that additional examinations are needed before a definitive diagnosis can be established.

The elephant has a history of health problems involving her feet. She previously suffered from infections and abscesses conditions that can become serious if left untreated.

The Safari Park administration also said Madhubala had recently experienced a calcium deficiency. Her calcium levels however have reportedly improved.

The veterinary expert noted that prolonged exposure to hard surfaces can contribute to foot-related complications in elephants. Such problems can affect mobility and may become particularly concerning when an elephant is unable to place weight on one of its legs.

Madhubala was moved to Karachi Safari Park in November 2024 from Karachi Zoo where she had been the only remaining elephant. Following her transfer she was housed alongside two other elephants, Sonia and Malika.

The arrangement was short-lived, however, as Sonia died approximately a month after the transfer.

Madhubala’s latest health issue has raised renewed concerns about the wellbeing and care of elephants kept in captivity. Her inability to use the right hind leg is particularly concerning because mobility problems can have wider effects on an elephant’s overall physical condition.

While the Safari Park administration says treatment is underway and further medical assessment is being conducted, a spokesperson for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) said they were unaware of Madhubala’s current condition.

Veterinarians are expected to continue monitoring the elephant as they investigate whether infection, previous foot problems or other underlying health issues are responsible for her current condition.

For now, authorities and veterinary staff are focused on stabilizing Madhubala and determining the appropriate treatment for her leg swelling and mobility problem.
