Keep your remote safe

During hot weather an air conditioner remote may suddenly stop working.  Most people immediately assume that the batteries are dead and replace them. However the problem is not always the batteries.

A minor technical issue or leftover electrical charge inside the remote can sometimes prevent it from working.

Before buying new batteries try these simple steps.

Remove the Batteries

Take both batteries out of the remote. Then press and hold the power button for about 5 to 10 seconds. Wait a few seconds then put the batteries back according to the + and – signs inside the battery compartment.

Point the remote at the AC and press the power button. It may start working again.

Clean the Sensor

Check the front of the remote, where the small infrared sensor is located.  Dust or dirt can weaken the signal. Gently clean it with a soft, dry cloth.

Check the battery position

Make sure the batteries are installed in the correct direction.  Even new batteries will not work if they are inserted incorrectly.

Clean the battery contacts

Dust or light corrosion on the metal battery contacts can affect the connection. Remove the batteries and gently clean the contacts with a dry soft cloth.  Avoid using water or any liquid.

Test the remote with your phone

Open your phone’s camera point the front of the remote toward the camera and press a button. If you see a small light flashing on the phone screen the remote is likely sending an infrared signal.  However some phone cameras may not detect infrared light.

If the remote is sending a signal but the AC still does not respond the problem may be with the AC’s infrared receiver or another electronic component.

You can switch off the AC and try turning it on again after a short while. If the problem continues it is better to have both the AC and remote checked by a qualified technician.

To keep the remote working properly protect it from moisture excessive heat and water. Avoid dropping it as repeated falls can damage its buttons or internal circuit. Also check old batteries regularly and replace them if they are leaking as leaking batteries can damage the remote’s internal parts.
