The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges that the administration violated the outlets’ First Amendment rights by revoking their journalists’ access without notice or due process. The organizations are seeking immediate relief to restore their access to the White House.

A federal judge could hear arguments on the outlets’ emergency request as early as this week, potentially prompting an immediate response from the administration.

In a joint statement, the three news organizations said: “This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes.”

“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting,” the outlets said. “Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”

The dispute began after the Trump administration barred journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from accessing the White House grounds, including their usual workspaces and equipment. Reporters’ press credentials were revoked or confiscated on Saturday. CNN was also removed from its scheduled role in the television press pool.

Trump has defended the restrictions, saying he objected to what he described as negative coverage by the outlets. In a post on Truth Social, he accused the organizations of reporting “FAKE NEWS” and said they “should not be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES” while covering the president.

The restrictions have also drawn criticism from press-freedom organizations and other media groups. The legal challenge centers on whether the administration’s decision to restrict access based on the outlets’ reporting violates First Amendment protections and constitutional due-process requirements.

The case is expected to test the limits of presidential authority over White House press access and the constitutional protections afforded to journalists covering the government.
