RAWALPINDI: Tensions escalated in Rawalpindi after local residents reportedly caught and assaulted a man allegedly involved in the rape of a 12-year-old girl within the jurisdiction of New Town Police Station, before handing him over to police.

The video appears to show a shirtless man wearing a brown shalwar confronting and physically assaulting the suspect, who was being restrained by another older man dressed in a light-brown shalwar kameez.

The suspect, who appears to be wearing a grey shalwar kameez, was reportedly slapped and kicked before being forced to the ground. Several other men then gathered around him, with some appearing to restrain his movements and others standing nearby.

The footage also appears to show one individual carrying a stick while another records the incident on a mobile phone. Toward the end of the video, the suspect can be seen sitting on the ground while surrounded by several people.

Following the confrontation, the locals handed the alleged accused over to police, who took him into custody for further investigation.

Rawalpindi Police confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in connection with the case and that the suspect remains in police custody.

Police said the minor victim was shifted to a hospital for medical examination and treatment. Officials also stated that medical and forensic evidence is being collected as part of the investigation.
