Mpox case count rises to 41 in Sindh

KARACHI: Health authorities have confirmed another case of mpox in Sindh after a 19-year-old man from Karachi tested positive for the viral infection, taking the total number of reported cases in the province to 41 this year.

Hospital officials said the young man arrived at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital on Wednesday after developing a number of skin lesions on his body. Doctors assessed his symptoms and collected samples for laboratory testing to determine the cause of the rash.

The hospital sent the samples for a PCR test, which later confirmed that the patient had contracted mpox.

Officials said the latest case has increased the number of mpox infections reported in Sindh during the current year to 41. Karachi accounts for 13 of these cases, making it the main city in the province where health authorities have detected infections.

Health officials continue to monitor suspected cases and advise people to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms associated with mpox, particularly unexplained skin rashes or lesions accompanied by other signs of infection.

The confirmation of the latest case has also highlighted the importance of timely testing and identification of suspected infections. Health authorities are continuing surveillance efforts to detect cases early and prevent further transmission.

Mpox can spread through close physical contact with an infected person, particularly through contact with lesions or contaminated materials.
