Mudslide kills one, leaves 11 missing in eastern China

At least one person has died and 11 others are missing after a mudslide struck a village in Ji’an city in China’s Jiangxi province on Saturday, following days of heavy rain triggered by Typhoon Saudel.

China’s Xinhua news agency, citing the country’s flood control authorities, reported that rescue teams recovered one victim and pulled two people alive from the debris. The rescued individuals were in stable condition.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing as authorities evacuate residents from affected areas and work to prevent further disasters.

Saudel has caused widespread flooding across China’s southern and eastern regions, particularly in Fujian and Guangdong. Heavy rainfall has submerged roads, damaged bridges and buildings, and forced authorities to suspend schools and public transport in several areas.

More than 83,000 people have been evacuated in Fujian, while hundreds of thousands have been relocated across Zhejiang and neighbouring provinces since late August.

The typhoon made its third landfall in Fujian on Thursday after strengthening over the South China Sea. It is the seventh typhoon to hit China this year, with forecasters warning that the region could face a longer and more intense storm season amid strengthening El Niño conditions.
