Authorities in Multan have completed action against an unregistered orphanage following the death of 15-year-old Wasim Abbas with 106 children returned to their families and 16 others transferred to the Child Protection Bureau.

According to the Child Protection Bureau the process of handing over children living at the facility to their relatives has been completed. The remaining 16 children have been moved to the bureau for protection and care.

The authorities have also vacated both buildings used by the orphanage following the transfer of the children. The action comes after the incident involving Wasim Abbas raised serious concerns about the safety and treatment of children living in unregistered care facilities.

Officials said the orphanage’s registration application had previously been rejected. The registration of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) operating the facility has also been cancelled.

Meanwhile the secretary general of the orphanage’s governing body who was arrested in connection with the case is scheduled to be presented before a local court according to the report.

The case gained widespread attention after Wasim Abbas 15-year-old orphan was allegedly run over by a car in Multan. The suspect identified as Tauqeer reportedly died during a subsequent police encounter on Wednesday.

According to the District Officer of the Crime Control Department (CCD) the suspect had been on remand and allegedly escaped from custody before the encounter.

The CCD stated that police attempted to stop two motorcyclists on the Northern Bypass in Bahawalpur. The suspects allegedly opened fire while fleeing and Tauqeer was killed by gunfire from his companion who escaped from the scene.

Reports further stated that Wasim had allegedly been struck by a car the previous day. The circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death and the subsequent events have drawn attention to the need for accountability and stronger safeguards for vulnerable children.

The transfer of 122 children and the closure of the two orphanage buildings mark a significant development in the case. The incident has also highlighted concerns about the regulation of childcare institutions and the responsibility of authorities to ensure that children in residential care are protected from abuse and neglect.
