Mustafa Kamal admits MQM-P rifts have reached grassroots level

KARACHI: Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has acknowledged that internal differences within Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) have intensified and spread to the grassroots level, saying the issue can only be settled through party elections.

Speaking to a private media, Kamal said divisions within the party were evident at different levels. He maintained that holding organisational elections, scheduled for October, was the most effective way to strengthen the party and resolve the ongoing disputes.

The federal minister said he had made efforts to bridge the differences but acknowledged that there might have been shortcomings in those attempts. He stressed that once the elections were held, all workers would have to accept the outcome, regardless of who emerged successful or unsuccessful.

Responding to criticism from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Kamal said the PPP should not be concerned about MQM-P’s internal affairs. He also denied any confusion within the party regarding the Sindh government, saying there was no ambiguity over its position on what he described as poor governance in the province.

Kamal further argued that empowering local governments would benefit the MQM-P and the public. He said that had the proposed constitutional amendment been approved, local administrations would have greater authority and resources at their disposal.

He added that the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment should not be viewed simply as a victory or defeat for the MQM-P, but in terms of its broader implications for the country.
