PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reportedly initiated inquiries into development projects, assets and alleged irregularities during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s tenure in the province. Former chief ministers Sohail Afridi and Ali Amin Gandapur, former minister Fazal Hakim and former special assistant Dr Amjad Ali have been named in connection with the reported proceedings.
According to sources, NAB has launched two separate inquiries and sought records from several provincial departments to examine development expenditures, contractual arrangements, property transactions and alleged irregularities in recruitment.
In the first inquiry, NAB KP has requested details from the Communication and Works (C&W) Department regarding development schemes undertaken during Sohail Afridi’s tenure. The bureau has reportedly sought information about approved roads, buildings and other projects, allocated budgets, contractors, tendering procedures, completion timelines and additional payments.
Notices have also reportedly been issued to the Revenue Department, Registrar DHA Peshawar, Peshawar Development Authority (PDA), Local Government Department and other relevant offices for records concerning land allotments, map approvals and the utilisation of public funds.
A NAB source told *Minute Mirror* that complaints had been received regarding certain development schemes allegedly approved on an urgent basis and possible favouritism in the award of contracts. The records are being sought to assess the allegations.
The second inquiry concerns assets allegedly beyond known sources of income. According to sources, NAB is collecting financial and property information relating to Sohail Afridi, Ali Amin Gandapur, Fazal Hakim and Dr Amjad Ali. The process reportedly involves obtaining relevant records from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), State Bank of Pakistan and land and development authorities.
Dr Amjad Ali is reported to have received five notices in connection with an assets-related inquiry. Sources said he had been summoned to the NAB office in Peshawar between October 20 and 22, 2026, to record his statement and provide relevant documents.
Four witnesses, including Bacha Syed, Muhammad Arif Shah, Siraj and another officer, have also reportedly been called to provide information about housing scheme allotments and contracts during his tenure.
Separately, NAB is reportedly examining allegations of irregular recruitment in various departments during the previous provincial administration. The review includes daily-wage and contractual appointments in the C&W Department, recruitment-related matters involving the PDA and DHA, and alleged favouritism in the Housing Department. Records concerning the appointments and the officials involved are reportedly being compiled.
The reported developments come amid legal proceedings concerning Sohail Afridi. According to the information provided by sources, the Peshawar High Court recently heard a petition seeking his recovery over allegations of detention and directed the relevant authorities to submit a response.
NAB officials, according to an informal statement cited by sources, said the bureau was proceeding in accordance with the law and would decide whether to convert the inquiries into formal investigations after examining the available records.
A C&W Department official reportedly confirmed receiving a letter from NAB and said the department was compiling information on development projects undertaken between 2024 and 2026.
Meanwhile, a source close to Dr Amjad Ali maintained that his assets were legally acquired and said he would cooperate with the bureau. A PTI spokesperson also criticised the reported action, describing it as politically motivated and expressing confidence that the party’s leaders would clear their names.
The next steps are expected to include scrutiny of departmental records, comparison of financial disclosures and further questioning where necessary. Any decision to initiate formal investigations or file references would depend on the findings.
The allegations remain subject to verification, and the initiation of an inquiry does not establish wrongdoing by any individual.
