North Korea declares nuclear status irreversible

North Korea has rejected criticism from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), declaring that its status as a nuclear-armed state is irreversible.

Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accused the UN nuclear watchdog of applying double standards after it passed a resolution condemning Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme.

In a statement carried by state media, Kim said the IAEA’s approach was undermining the international nuclear non-proliferation system. She accused the agency of overlooking what Pyongyang described as nuclear-related activities by the United States and South Korea while targeting North Korea’s nuclear programme.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry separately dismissed the IAEA resolution. It said the country’s nuclear status was firmly established and supported by its nuclear deterrent.

The statements came as Pyongyang continued to highlight efforts to strengthen its military capabilities. State media reported that Kim Jong Un recently completed a three-day inspection of major munitions factories.

During the visits, Kim said efforts to modernise the country’s defence capabilities were leading to major changes in the structure and capabilities of its armed forces.

Analysts have linked North Korea’s military development to its growing cooperation with Russia. Pyongyang and Moscow signed a mutual defence treaty in 2024. Analysts have also said that North Korean troops involved in the war in Ukraine have gained battlefield experience that could contribute to the country’s military development.

Kim also addressed propaganda officials during a training session in Pyongyang. He called for a more innovative and aggressive approach to what he described as modern ideological warfare.
