Three security guards at a private university in Peshawar’s Hayatabad area have been taken into police custody following an incident involving alleged aerial firing during a student protest.
The protest reportedly began after students at the university hostel raised concerns about several issues including electricity shortages poor-quality food and the lack of internet access.
According to students, one of their fellow students identified as Faizullah approached the hostel warden to complain about the problems. The students alleged that the warden responded angrily verbally abused him and later issued a notice seeking his removal from the university.
The students said they subsequently presented their concerns before the university registrar and vice chancellor. However they alleged that their complaints were not properly addressed during the discussions and that abusive language was used instead.
According to the protesting students the situation escalated during the demonstration when shots were fired into the air. They alleged that the firing took place on the instructions of the registrar.
Police subsequently detained three university security guards in connection with the incident. According to police officials the weapons reportedly being used by the guards were also taken into custody.
Authorities said a case was being registered against the security personnel. Police also confirmed that a committee had been formed to examine the students’ complaints and work toward resolving the issues raised by them.
The students are expected to submit their demands to the university administration in writing after two days. The administration will then review the demands and forward them to the university owners for consideration, according to the report.
The incident has brought attention to the concerns raised by students regarding hostel facilities and the manner in which their complaints were handled. The police investigation and the committee’s review are expected to establish further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged firing and the students’ grievances.
The allegations made by students regarding the conduct of university officials have not been independently verified in the report.
