Petrol relief extended to purchases below 5 litres

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has expanded its special petrol relief scheme, allowing consumers purchasing less than five litres of petrol to also benefit from the discounted rate.

Under the scheme, petrol is being provided nationwide at a discount of Rs100 per litre. The Prime Minister’s Office said consumers who purchase less than five litres will also receive relief through the digital token system.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, eligible consumers purchasing less than five litres of petrol will receive a discount of up to Rs500 through one token during a week.

The government will issue one token per week to eligible consumers. A maximum of four tokens will be available to each beneficiary during a month.

The scheme is aimed at providing direct relief to consumers amid high fuel prices. The government has introduced the mechanism to ensure that people who cannot afford to purchase larger quantities of petrol can also benefit from the subsidy.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the relief programme has now been launched across the country. Petrol will continue to be available at discounted rates under the special package.

The government has also announced a separate mechanism for owners of vehicles with engines up to 800cc.

Under this category, eligible vehicle owners will receive a Rs100-per-litre discount on the purchase of 10 litres of petrol every 10 days.

The scheme will provide three separate 10-litre tokens to eligible 800cc vehicle owners each month.

This means eligible consumers in the 800cc category can receive the discounted petrol three times during a month, subject to the scheme’s eligibility and token conditions.

The government has introduced the relief package as part of its efforts to reduce the impact of rising fuel prices on consumers. The scheme covers different categories of petrol users and provides discounts through a token-based system.

Officials said the mechanism would allow eligible consumers to obtain subsidised petrol according to the limits set for their respective categories.

The announcement comes amid political pressure over fuel prices and petroleum levies. Jamaat-i-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has also called for the withdrawal of the petroleum levy, linking the demand to the party’s planned protests.

The government’s latest relief mechanism is intended to provide targeted assistance to petrol consumers while maintaining limits on the quantity and frequency of discounted fuel purchases.
